10 places every dementia carer should know about in Worthing, Brighton & West Sussex

Whether you're planning a day out or looking for a supportive environment, knowing where to go can help create enjoyable experiences for both you and the person you care for.

Caring for someone living with dementia can be both incredibly rewarding and challenging. While many families feel a deep sense of love and responsibility, the journey can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when you’re unsure where to turn for advice, support or simply someone who understands.

At GoodOaks Homecare Sussex South, we regularly speak with families across Worthing, Brighton, Shoreham, Lancing and the surrounding Sussex communities who tell us the same thing: “I wish I had known about these services sooner.”

The good news is that you don’t have to navigate dementia care alone. Across Sussex, there are many organisations, support groups and community services offering guidance, companionship and practical help for people living with dementia and the people who care for them.

Here are 10 places every dementia carer should know about.

1. Mo’s Memory Café – Worthing

One of the community initiatives we are especially proud of at GoodOaks Homecare Sussex South is Mo’s Memory Café, held every other Wednesday  from 11am to 1pm at our GoodOaks Home Care Sussex South office on Newland Road, Worthing.

Created in memory of my mum, Maureen (“Mo”), who lived with dementia, the café was founded from personal experience of how important connection, understanding and a welcoming space can be for families affected by dementia. Whether you’re caring for a husband, wife, parent, friend or neighbour, you’ll always receive a warm welcome.

Mo’s Memory Café offers a relaxed environment where people living with dementia, family carers and friends can meet for:

  • Tea, coffee and homemade cake
  • Friendly conversation
  • Social activities
  • Support from others who understand
  • Access to wellbeing services, including our wonderful hairdresser Sarah, who has years of experience supporting people living with dementia and understands how a simple haircut can become a meaningful social occasion.

There is no pressure and no judgement – just a warm welcome and the opportunity to connect with others.

2. Guild Care – Worthing

Guild Care provides valuable support for older people, people living with dementia and family carers across Worthing.

Their services include dementia support, wellbeing activities, day opportunities and practical advice designed to help people remain connected to their community.

For many families, having access to local activities and trusted support can make a significant difference to everyday life.

3. Age UK West Sussex, Brighton & Hove

Age UK provides information, advice and support for older people and their families across Sussex.

For dementia carers, they offer guidance around:

  • Local services
  • Wellbeing support
  • Practical advice
  • Staying socially connected

Connecting with other people going through similar experiences can help carers feel less isolated and more confident.

4. Brighton & Hove Carers Centre

If you’re supporting someone living with dementia in Brighton or Hove, the Brighton & Hove Carers Centre offers advice, counselling, peer support and practical information specifically for unpaid carers.

Having somewhere to talk, ask questions and share experiences can be invaluable.

5. Alzheimer’s Society

The Alzheimer’s Society is one of the UK’s leading dementia support organisations.

They provide:

  • Dementia advice
  • Support groups
  • Information sessions
  • The Dementia Support Line

Whether someone has recently received a diagnosis or you have been caring for someone for years, their support can provide reassurance and practical guidance.

6. Dementia Adventure

A dementia diagnosis does not mean life has to stop.

Dementia Adventure helps people living with dementia continue enjoying meaningful experiences, including outdoor activities, nature and supported holidays.

Their work highlights the importance of maintaining confidence, independence and enjoyment after diagnosis.

7. Crossroads Care

Caring for someone else can be demanding, and it’s important that carers also have time to rest and recharge.

Crossroads Care provides respite support, giving carers the opportunity to take a break while knowing their loved one is being cared for safely.

Whether it’s time to meet a friend, attend an appointment, go shopping or simply rest, respite care can make a meaningful difference.

8. Your local GP Practice

If someone living with dementia experiences sudden changes, it’s important not to assume it is simply the condition progressing.

Changes such as:

  • Increased confusion
  • Falls
  • Changes in behaviour
  • Reduced mobility
  • Increased tiredness

can sometimes be linked to other health concerns, such as infections, dehydration or medication changes.

Speaking with your GP can help identify potential causes and ensure the right support is provided.

9. GoodOaks Homecare Sussex South

At GoodOaks Homecare Sussex South, we support people living with dementia and their families with personalised care designed around individual needs.

Our support can include:

Our aim is to help people continue living safely and confidently in the place they know best — their own home.

We also provide preventative healthcare support, including rapid urine testing by specially trained care professionals where appropriate, helping identify possible health concerns early and supporting communication with healthcare professionals.

10. Don’t Forget Yourself

The final place every dementia carer should know about is somewhere you can take care of yourself.

Looking after your own wellbeing is an important part of caring for someone else.

Whether it’s:

  • A walk along Worthing seafront
  • A coffee with a friend in Brighton
  • Lunch in Shoreham
  • Time spent doing something you enjoy

taking time for yourself is not selfish — it helps you continue providing support with energy and confidence.

You’re Never Alone

One of the most important things we have learned from supporting families across Worthing, Brighton and the wider Sussex area is that dementia affects more than just the person diagnosed.

It affects husbands, wives, daughters, sons, friends and neighbours too.

There is a strong network of organisations, community groups and local people ready to offer support. Sometimes the hardest part is simply knowing where to start.

At GoodOaks Homecare Sussex South, we are proud to support families through specialist dementia care, respite services and community initiatives like Mo’s Memory Café.

Our role is not only to provide care, but also to help families find the right support for their individual circumstances.
