Mo’s Memory community café
With over 15,000 people in West Sussex living with dementia, the need for safe, welcoming spaces where individuals and their carers can find support and companionship is greater than ever. That’s exactly what Mo’s Café offers, and it does so with warmth and a strong personal legacy.
In memory of Moreen Drew
Mo’s Memory Café was founded in loving memory of Moreen Drew, a Worthing resident who lived with dementia and passed away in 2006. Her daughter, Rebecca Drew, now leads the GoodOaks Sussex South branch and has channelled her personal experience into something positive and powerful.
“My Mum would have loved the Café,” says Rebecca. “She was such a chatty lady, but as dementia took hold, she lost her confidence and spent much of her time indoors. Twenty years ago, there was less awareness about the importance of maintaining social ties and that’s why this initiative is so important.”
Mo’s Café is more than just a coffee morning, it’s a community lifeline.
A space to connect, relax and rejuvenate
Held every other Wednesday from 11am to 1pm at the Sussex South office (72 Newland Road, Worthing BN11 1LB), the café welcomes individuals with memory issues and their carers into a safe, friendly, and inclusive environment. Visitors can relax with others who understand their journey, and access support and practical help.
Mo’s Café is thoughtfully designed with three key spaces:
- The Community Room – A cosy hub with music, a small library, and free refreshments.
- The Games Room – Always a hit! Guests can enjoy darts, Bagatelle, or practice their swing on a mini indoor putting green.
- The Spa Room – Here, the focus is on wellbeing. Steph, a trained foot care professional, offers gentle, professional foot care which is essential for mobility and comfort. Hair stylist Sarah is also on hand to provide trims and haircuts. Both have extensive experience supporting individuals with dementia and bring a kind, respectful approach to their work.
Supporting the whole family
Caring for a loved one with dementia can be incredibly demanding both emotionally and physically. Mo’s Café gives carers a chance to take a breath, gather strength, and connect with others on a similar path. These small interactions can make a world of difference.
