Last week our team of care professionals here at GoodOaks Aylesbury, participated in targeted Dementia training at our office in Oxford Road.

The targeted specialised dementia training sessions allow staff to gain understanding of how it feels to live with symptoms of dementia and how it impacts day to day life.

Activities involve trying to complete simple tasks with strobe lighting to replicate the hallucinations people experience in their daily lives. Moving with weights and even skittles in gloves to replicate the touch sensation. During this session, care teams will be dressed in a suit that simulates ageing, and be asked to undertake tasks while experiencing many of the symptoms our clients are living with day-in, day-out, such as visual and auditory hallucinations, hearing and sight issues, and mobility and dexterity problems.

This hands on training builds a much deeper understanding of the disease and equips our care teams with the skills to provide outstanding care in the face of behaviours that they may not have previously understood so well.

Branch Director Fiza Bukhari said “being able to equip our teams with the knowledge and expertise they need to go that extra mile for clients living with dementia, is wonderful. We work hard every day to improve our service and this training is a glowing example of how we deliver the highest quality of care within our community.”

Caring for those living with dementia requires patience, empathy, and expert knowledge. We are committed to providing our care professionals with the best. Together, we are enhancing the quality of life for those living with dementia. For more information on our visiting and live-in care services, contact us HERE
