Preventing UTIs in older adults is an important part of supporting wellbeing, independence and safer living at home.
At GoodOaks Homecare Sussex South, we believe exceptional care is about more than supporting daily routines – it’s about recognising changes early, promoting wellbeing and helping older adults remain safe and independent at home.
As part of our commitment to preventative healthcare, we have introduced rapid urine testing, helping identify possible urinary tract infections (UTIs) earlier and supporting families across Worthing, Brighton and surrounding Sussex communities.
Why are UTIs a concern for older adults?
Urinary tract infections are common among older adults and can sometimes lead to a sudden decline in health. While UTIs are often associated with symptoms such as pain or discomfort, older people may experience less obvious signs.
Families may notice changes such as:
- Increased confusion or delirium
- More frequent falls
- Reduced mobility
- Unusual tiredness or drowsiness
- Changes in appetite
- Increased or worsening incontinence
- Changes in behaviour or agitation
These symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for natural ageing, dementia progression or general tiredness. Recognising changes early can help ensure the right support is provided as soon as possible.
Supporting early detection through specialist training
At GoodOaks Homecare Sussex South, we continue to invest in training that helps our care professionals provide proactive, preventative support.
A dedicated group of our carers have completed additional training in urine testing, giving them enhanced skills in recognising potential UTI symptoms and carrying out rapid urine tests appropriately.
Where a client experiences symptoms that may suggest a UTI, and with their consent, one of our specially trained carers can complete a rapid urine test. The results can then be shared with the appropriate healthcare professional, such as a GP, to support further assessment and treatment decisions.
This service is designed to compliment – not replace – medical advice and clinical assessment.
By identifying possible concerns earlier, we aim to support better outcomes and help reduce avoidable hospital admissions where possible.
Helping older adults stay safely at home
For many families across Worthing, Brighton, Hove, Shoreham-by-Sea, Lancing, Rustington and the surrounding areas, keeping a loved one safe at home is a top priority.
Hospital admissions can sometimes have a significant impact on older adults, potentially leading to:
- Reduced confidence
- Loss of mobility
- Increased confusion
- Higher risk of falls
- Longer recovery periods
Our aim is to provide families with reassurance that their loved one has regular support, observation and a trusted care professional who understands their normal routines and can recognise when something changes.
Preventative care beyond UTI support
Preventing health concerns before they become more serious is at the heart of our approach.
Alongside urine testing, our care professionals support clients through:
- Hydration monitoring
- Medication support
- Falls prevention
- Nutrition and wellbeing support
- Monitoring changes in health or behaviour
- Communication with families and healthcare professionals
Small observations and early interventions can make a meaningful difference, helping older adults maintain their independence and continue living well at home.

Every day, our care professionals support older adults throughout Worthing, Brighton, Hove and surrounding communities.
