This week, our team attended the Dementia Steering Group meeting at Reading Town Hall, hosted by Age UK Berkshire and organised by Hayley Helsdown and her team.
The meeting brought together local charities, NHS professionals, social care teams, community leaders and council representatives, all working towards a shared goal: improving life for people living with dementia in Reading.
Building a dementia-friendly community in Reading
Dementia affects much more than memory. It can change how someone experiences their surroundings, interacts with others and manages everyday tasks. Creating a dementia-friendly town means ensuring people feel understood, respected and supported wherever they go, from shops and cafes to healthcare settings and community spaces.
The steering group focused on practical ways to:
-
Improve dementia awareness and education across Reading
-
Strengthen signposting to local dementia support services
-
Equip businesses and public services with the confidence to support individuals experiencing cognitive decline
-
Encourage collaboration between charities, healthcare providers and homecare services
By working together, we can help reduce isolation, promote independence and enable people living with dementia to remain active members of their community.

Person-centred dementia support at home
Our mission at GoodOaks Homecare Reading, Wokingham and Bracknell is to provide compassionate, person-centred dementia care that enables people to live well and safely in their own homes for longer.
We believe individuals living with dementia should feel valued, included and empowered within their community.
By supporting initiatives that improve awareness and accessibility across Reading, we are helping to create an environment where people living with dementia are not only cared for, but truly understood.
We look forward to continuing our involvement with the dementia steering group and playing our part in making Reading, Wokingham and Bracknell more dementia friendly for everyone.
