A short ferry ride from the mainland, The Isle of Wight is home to beautiful scenery, quaint villages and stunning coastlines. The diamond shaped island is roughly 23 miles long and 13 miles wide with a current population of 141,000.
Transport Links
A number of car ferries operate daily with the fastest being around 22 minutes from Portsmouth to Ryde. The next is 45 minutes from Lymington to Yarmouth and roughly an hour from Southampton to Cowes. Did you know that you can also reach the island on hovercraft? You don’t need a car to visit the Isle of Wight, the island can easily be explored with everything the island has to offer on foot, on bike or on a train. A regular bus service will also run you to and from and around the main towns.
Things to do on the Isle of Wight?
Walking and Nature
There are plenty of beautiful walks to be enjoyed, at varying levels of difficulty, across the Island. You can explore Compton Bay, Headon Warren and from coastal to trail – there is something for everyone. The needles is a famous natural landmark on the Isle of Wight. They are made up of three rows of natural chalk pillars, each around 30 metres high. The Needles chairlift is a great way to view the natural formations and there are a number of other attractions in the vicinity where you can have fun and explore the area.
Art and History
Isle of Wight Arts is host to a variety of artists and is situated in Freshwater. It’s not-for-profit and run for local island artists! In Newport, there is also Quay Arts gallery and venue which is host to live events. How about a trip to the Isle of Wight sweet manufactory where you can view a variety of sweet treats being in a factory right in front of your eyes. If you want to visit a museum, you could take a trip to the Cowes Maritime Museum. There you can view all aspects of local maritime activity, objects and images.
Dining and shopping
With so many independent shops to mooch around, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to shopping. In the main high street towns of Cowes, Ryde and Ventor there are lots of retailers, tea rooms, restaurants and bars to enjoy.
The Hut in Colwell is a local gem located on the North coast of the island, sheltered from the wind, serving amazing food with exceptional views across to Poole.
True Food Kitchen, Ventnor has been awarded the Travellers’ Award 2023.
Boat House, Yarmouth is dog friendly and there you’ll find delicious, locally sourced food and ice cream.
Sport and recreation
Cowes week is a world renowned sailing event held at Isle of Wight Festival every Summer that sees teams enter from across the globe and attracts many people to the island to participate and spectate! Also host to the famous Isle of Wight festival that has been going since 1968 and is one of the most historic and well known festivals in the UK.

According to Rightmove “ Properties in Isle Of Wight had an overall average price of £363,566 over the last year. The majority of sales in Isle Of Wight during the last year were detached properties, selling for an average price of £579,686. Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £313,636, with flats fetching £187,579. Overall, sold prices in Isle Of Wight over the last year were 3% up on the previous year and 16% up on the 2020 peak of £314,087.”
