Filling a gap in local support
Finding the right dementia support in Woodford Green can feel overwhelming, particularly when you’re not sure where to start. That’s why GoodOaks Homecare Woodford Green has created a monthly dementia drop-in session at Woodford Green Library – a welcoming place where local people can ask questions, share concerns and find out more about the support available.
There’s no referral, appointment or waiting list. Just come along, have a chat and leave with a little more clarity and reassurance.
What to expect
The dementia support drop-in sessions take place on the first Tuesday of every month, from 1pm to 2pm, at Woodford Green Library, Snakes Lane West, IG8 0DX.
There’s no need to book and there’s no cost to attend.
It’s an informal, friendly space where you can talk openly about whatever is on your mind. You might have questions about a recent dementia diagnosis, be looking for advice about local support, or simply want to talk to someone who understands what you and your family are going through.
Why we started it
Through our work with families across Woodford Green and the surrounding area, we’ve seen how difficult it can be to know where to turn when dementia becomes part of everyday life.
Sometimes, people simply need somewhere to ask a question or talk through their concerns without feeling like they need to have everything figured out first.
Working with Woodford Green Library gives us the opportunity to bring that support into the heart of the local community, in a place that’s familiar, accessible and easy to find.
According to the Alzheimer’s Society, only around 46% of people living with dementia in the UK currently have a diagnosis. That means many families may be living with concerns about memory or changes in behaviour without yet knowing where to turn for help.
You Are Not Alone
Dementia can affect the whole family – and caring for someone can sometimes feel lonely.
As part of our You Are Not Alone campaign, GoodOaks surveyed 1,000 unpaid carers about their experiences. The research found that unpaid carers were twice as likely to have felt lonely in the previous week compared with the general public. 62% per cent also reported feeling stressed, while 48% said they were able to meet their loved one’s wellbeing needs but not their own.
These findings highlight just how important connection and support can be for people who spend much of their time caring for someone else.
Our dementia drop-in session is one small way we can help create that connection – giving families and carers somewhere to talk, ask questions and feel less alone.
Dementia support, whenever you need it
If you’d like to learn more about dementia before or after attending the session, GoodOaks has also created a free Dementia Guide as part of the You Are Not Alone campaign.
The guide covers topics including understanding a dementia diagnosis, talking to your GP, nutrition, communication, home safety, specialist care options and planning ahead.
