Blood pressure

Every year, during Know Your Numbers! Week, thousands of people get their blood pressure checked to prevent heart attacks and strokes, a crucial step in avoiding “the silent killer.”

This week, our team at GoodOaks Homecare – Reading got their blood pressure checked.

Know Your Numbers! Week, which is 2nd-8th September this year, aims to encourage individuals with undiagnosed high blood pressure to get checked and receive essential treatment and support to manage the condition. This initiative was started by the charity Blood Pressure UK, which is now part of The Heart Research Institute.

Amid the everyday pressures of life, we understand that taking the time for a health check isn’t always a priority. However, did you know that it’s the first step to preventing heart attacks and strokes? If you’re over 40, you may be eligible for a free check at your local pharmacy. It only takes a few minutes!

High blood pressure is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke, often showing no symptoms until it’s too late, earning it the name ‘the silent killer’. At GoodOaks Homecare – Reading, our team prioritizes regular health checks to monitor their levels.

Janine Lewis, Care Coordinator, has lived with the complications of high blood pressure since she was pregnant with her first child. Checking her own levels daily is helping her stay in tune with her body, while her medications are doing the work of keeping her alive.

Knowing your numbers means you can start making healthy lifestyle changes or start taking medicines if you need them to bring your blood pressure down to a healthy level.

High blood pressure is not simply a part of aging. You can take steps to know your numbers and lower them if it’s high, no matter how old you are.

Using a home monitor is an effective and inexpensive way to stay in control of your health and the evidence behind it continues to get stronger. It provides a way for you to take control of your health, feel confident, and alleviate the pressure on the healthcare system at the same time. It offers a practical way to Know Your Numbers! without visiting your GP, practice nurse, or pharmacist in person. It puts you in control and can truly save lives. If in doubt, consult your GP or nurse! Just don’t ignore it.
