Try Before You Bike: Helping older residents in Redbridge get out and about

A simple idea worth knowing about

Sometimes, a local initiative doesn’t need to be complicated to make a difference. Redbridge Council is supporting the Try Before You Bike scheme, delivered locally by Peddle My Wheels, giving residents the opportunity to try an electric, pedal or cargo bike through a simple monthly subscription.

There’s no deposit and no long-term commitment, so residents can try a bike for themselves without having to buy one upfront.

For older people across Woodford Green, South Woodford, Chigwell and Wanstead, this could be an interesting option for getting out and about, staying active and making local journeys a little easier.

Taking the pressure out of trying something new

One of the things that makes the scheme appealing is the flexibility. There’s no deposit and no lengthy contract, with the monthly subscription able to be cancelled after the first month. Peddle My Wheels will also collect the bike free of charge.

The bikes come with a lock and lights, as well as theft and damage cover. Residents, workers and students in Redbridge can also currently access discounts on selected bikes, including £60 off an electric bike each month for four months or £150 off a cargo bike for three months.

For anyone who hasn’t cycled for a while or is simply unsure whether an e-bike would work for them, being able to try one first can make the decision feel much less daunting.

Rather than making a significant purchase and hoping it works out, the scheme gives people the opportunity to see whether cycling fits comfortably into their everyday routine.

Why getting out and about matters

At GoodOaks Homecare Woodford Green, we spend time with older people and their families across Woodford Green, South Woodford and the wider Redbridge area. We know that getting outdoors and staying connected with the local community can be an important part of maintaining a sense of routine and wellbeing.

It might be a trip to the shops, visiting a friend, getting some fresh air or simply enjoying a familiar route. These everyday activities can provide opportunities to stay active, maintain social connections and continue doing the things that matter to you.

For families supporting someone living with dementia, familiar routines and opportunities to remain engaged with the community can be particularly valuable. Of course, cycling will not be suitable for everyone, and individual confidence, mobility and safety should always be considered.

A local scheme worth knowing about

If you or someone you know in Woodford Green, South Woodford, Chigwell or Wanstead has wondered whether an e-bike could make getting around easier, the Try Before You Bike scheme offers a simple way to explore the option before committing to a purchase. For some older people, being able to get out independently can make a real difference to everyday life – whether that means popping to the shops, visiting friends and family, getting to a local appointment or simply enjoying some fresh air. An e-bike may not be right for everyone, but having the opportunity to try one first means you can see whether it works for you and fits comfortably into your routine.
