My visit to Bedford House Community Association

Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting Bedford House Community Association (BHCA) in Buckhurst Hill and I left genuinely impressed. From the moment you step through the door, you’re greeted with warmth, creativity, and a palpable sense of community. BHCA is truly an asset to the local area, offering a wide and engaging array of activities every week.

A hub of creativity & connection

BHCA runs over 45 courses and activities weekly, with more than 500 people passing through each week it’s painting, crafts, or poetry, there’s something for everyone:

  • Arts & crafts, led by experienced tutors.
  • Creative writing and poetry appreciation.
  • Jewellery making, drawing, and fusing workshops
  • Local history walks, guided by knowledgeable volunteers

It’s this blend of artistry and learning that gives BHCA its unique charm.

Offering for older adults

I was particularly impressed by their commitment to programmes designed for older adults because that is something often overlooked in community hubs including a wide range of activities and classes:

  1. Seated dance & contemporary dancercise
Weekly classes that are accessible to those with mobility limitations or living with dementia.
  2. Community gardening
Held the first Thursday of each month, these free, outdoor sessions offer gentle exercise and connection with others.
  3. Crafting circle
On Mondays, BH Crafters meet in a relaxed, friendly environment, perfect for creativity and companionship .
  4. Tai Chi and fitness walks
Drawing on evidence of health benefits such as improved balance and reduced stress—wonderful for physical and mental wellbeing.

A truly community-centred approach

BHCA subsidises many activities, keeping costs 20-30 % lower than typical and offering several courses donation-based or free . This ensures they remain accessible to all, particularly older residents who might otherwise miss out

Final thoughts

My visit wasn’t just informative, it was really inspiring! Bedford House is more than just a community centre, it’s a vibrant hub of learning, wellness, and connection. For older adults, the combination of gentle physical activity, social crafts, and supportive classes is invaluable.

Whether you’re after a seated dance class, a spot of gardening, or a friendly craft group, Bedford House has it all. I can’t recommend it warmly enough!
