Syringa Ward at Whipps Cross Hospital is a wonderful example of compassionate care for older people, demonstrating how person-centred support can make a meaningful difference to patients and their families, particularly for those approaching the end of life.
The team has been recognised through the Barts Health Heroes awards and has played an important role in Whipps Cross Hospital’s Gold Standards Framework work for end-of-life care. These achievements reflect a culture centred around dignity, compassion, respect and treating every person as an individual.
Creating calm in a hospital environment
One of the things that makes Syringa Ward particularly inspiring is the way the team has created a calm indoor garden area within the ward.
With plants, greenery and a peaceful atmosphere, the space helps create a softer, more welcoming environment. For older people who may be frail, anxious, confused or nearing the end of life, creating moments of calm and familiarity can make a real difference.
The ward has also introduced an activity table, giving patients opportunities for gentle engagement and meaningful interaction. The day room includes a water feature and tea trolley, helping create a more homely environment where patients and families can spend time together.
These thoughtful touches demonstrate that good care is about more than meeting clinical needs. It is also about creating an environment where people feel comfortable, respected and cared for.
Person-centred care in practice
The Gold Standards Framework focuses on providing high-quality care for people approaching the end of life, while recognising what matters most to each individual and their family.
Syringa Ward demonstrates how these principles can be put into practice. Alongside medical treatment and clinical care, the team considers comfort, dignity, emotional wellbeing and the importance of family connection.
For families facing an incredibly difficult time, knowing that their loved one is being cared for as a whole person can provide valuable reassurance.
