Hear from one of our visiting care professionals, Gemma
It never appealed to me to work in an office all day so I knew I’d end up in more of an active role. Then one day a friend recommended looking into what care roles are available, I knew it would be a good fit for me as I love meeting new people and everyone always said I could talk for England! I’ve always been a naturally caring person and I love that I get to put this to good use and put a smile on people’s faces.
It depends what type of shift I’m working, a typical morning shift I would help my client get ready for the day, make them breakfast, give them their medication and then have a bit of a chat and a catch up over a coffee before heading to my next client.
If I’m working an afternoon shift I could be taking them to an appointment, shopping or out to a garden centre.
I absolutely love the fact that every day is different!
I really like building up a relationship with a client, you can really tell that they genuinely look forward to you visiting. It’s lovely to see them light up when they talk about their friends and family, it’s fascinating to hear their stories about their lives, I could listen to them for hours.
Would this role suit you?
This role is great if you are a people person, no day is the same and you will get to meet some incredible people on a daily basis. You must be able to think on your feet and work independently as sometimes you will be visiting clients unaccompanied . This role can work well around family responsibilities, whilst studying and also as a full time role. Working as a care professional can be a brilliant way to gain experience in the sector, there are opportunities to gain qualifications whilst working which could help you progress into other roles within the sector.
