Social Care Reform 2021 – Should I Start a Home Care Business?

Much of the analysis of the announcements made in early September about reform to Social Care have focussed around tax increases, NHS spending, and residential care.
However, that is not the full picture and here, we will look into what social care reform means for those thinking about starting a home care business in 2022.

What are the UK social care reforms?

The main announcements for the September 2021 Social Care reform announcements are:
• The introduction of a cap on personal care costs of £86,000
• Financial assistance to those without substantial assets (100% funded for those with less than £20,000 in assets and on a sliding scale from £20k to £100k)
• Wider support for the social care system, particularly staffing
• Integration of health and social care systems

When will the social care reforms start?

In October 2023. This is the point where expenditure will start counting towards the lifetime cap of £86,000. Over the next three years, social care will receive an extra £5.4bn, an amount which will increase from there as more people hit the cap and the NHS has cleared some of its backlog.
