From the Royal Navy to Homecare

How James found his purpose with GoodOaks

James and RM Amanda

When James Minter opened GoodOaks Homecare East Herts, it marked a new chapter not only in his career but in his life. Having served ten years as a Royal Navy officer before leading businesses and executive recruitment teams in London, James’s professional journey was far from the traditional route into care. Yet, like so many of our Franchise Partners, James was drawn to the business not just as a commercial opportunity, but as a way to make a genuine difference in people’s lives.

Shared values in every partnership

James’s inspiration came from caring for his mother-in-law, Polly, alongside his wife Christina. The experience of supporting her through her later years opened his eyes to the skill, compassion and professionalism of the care professionals who supported their family.

“It was a life-changing experience,” James says. “We were supported by incredible carers and nurses, and I realised how much difference good care can make – not just for the person receiving it, but for the whole family.”

That realisation led James to explore the homecare sector, that’s where he discovered GoodOaks.

James was particularly drawn to GoodOaks’ emphasis on people – valuing and developing care professionals, empowering Franchise Partners, and keeping clients at the centre of everything.

“GoodOaks stood out because it has the right balance of professional but personal, ambitious but caring,” James explains. “It’s a business with heart, and that really matters to me.”

Bringing exceptional care to East Herts

Now, with the support of his Care Manager, Amanda Mudie, James has built a team dedicated to delivering exceptional visiting and live-in care across East Herts. Together, they’re ensuring more people can remain comfortably in their own homes feeling supported, with dignity, respect, and a sense of belonging.

“In many ways, this business is about creating the kind of care we’d all want for our own families,” says James. “That’s what drives me every day.”

Building a business that makes a difference

James’s journey is a great example of what’s possible when purpose meets opportunity. His story reflects the core of our network – where people from all walks of life come together with one mission: to make lives better through exceptional care.

If you share that vision and are looking for a business that creates both commercial and social value, we’d love to hear from you.
