Hi, 

Sounds harsh I know. 

 

I was talking to some new partners today who articulated a worry they had – how would they persuade an amazing Registered Manager to join them, a one-man band, over an established operation with a whole support team underneath them?

 

And on the face of it, it didn’t necessarily look pretty:

  • They might not be able to pay as much as established rivals

  • If there were no care pros available to cover a care visit, it’d be RM (and owner!) out of the office with their gloves and aprons on 😬

  • There were 0 clients, and 0 care pros on board, and the RM would be expected to get stuck into the hustle of making the phone ring

  • There was no ‘social proof’ to reassure candidates – no reviews, no recommendations, no local media coverage. 

 

And to be honest, there will be some people for whom those obstacles are insurmountable. 

 

But that’s not who we’re looking for. 

 

You need to be clear about who you’re looking for, and speak directly to them in your job ads. A little like Shackleton’s ad for his exploration of antarctica; “Men wanted for hazardous journey, small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful, honor and recognition in case of success. 

 

Well, maybe toned down a little. But using your job ads as a filter might mean you have fewer applicants, but the ones you do have will be understanding the challenge that awaits them and excited about the impact they can make. 

 

Second, instead of dwelling on the perceived negatives, focus on the positives of a start-up:

  • Build something from the ground up, working closely with the director to build a service you are proud of

  • Financial rewards so when the company does well, so do you.

  • Make an impact on a small group of clients and care pros that you’ll get to know intimately

  • Have the freedom of a start-up with the support, training and infrastructure of an award-winning franchise

  • Join a Top 20 rated large homecare group and be part of something special (there’s your social proof right there!)

Bonus packages for Registered Managers has been hinted at there, but that’s a whole other topic (Hint – it’s both quite complex and really very simple).
