Derby is also surrounded by other vibrant cities such as Nottingham, Birmingham, Stoke-on-Trent and Leicester. Transport Links
Being one of the most central cities in the UK, Derby has great connections and transport links and can easily be accessed by car, train or bus.
Travelling by bus? Then head to Derby bus station that hosts 24 bays for local bus services and five coach bays including the National Express service. The bus service covers all parts of Derby and surrounding areas.
Travelling by East Midland Railway is only 93 minutes from London St Pancras with 35 direct services everyday making visiting the Capitol city very appealing.
By Car, Derby is just 15 minutes from the M1 junction 24 making it convenient to enter and exit.
Things to do in Derby?
Walking and Nature
Elvaston Castle Country Park is a beautiful area of open parkland, woodland and gardens. It covers approx 300 acres and at the centre of the estate is the castle itself where you can explore the grounds and gardens.
Shipley Country park is also located in Derbyshire and offers lots to see and do in the park, walking, cycling, picnicking, bird watching and photography.
Art and History
The Derby Museum and Art Gallery located on The Strand (DE1) is an exciting museum with a variety of collections and was established in 1879. The world famous artist Joseph Wright has a collection there also. The Derby Theatre for those who love to watch shows and is a prominent theatre for performing arts and all things theatrical. You can check out their website for information on what’s lined up. Derby is also home to the UK’s first factory, the Silk Mill, which became the Museum of Making in 2021. All of the above are definitely worth a visit.
Dining and shopping
Derbion is a vibrant shopping mall with over 200 retailers, a cinema, bowling alley and adventure golf! There is also a great selection of chain restaurants there that will suit all palettes, from Pizza Express to Wagamma, Greggs, KFC and Carluccious ( to name just a few!)
The Cathedral Quarter is another great place to explore the rich heritage of Derby and offers a mix of local independent businesses as well. If you go to their website you can see a full rundown of festivals and upcoming events on offer throughout the year.
Sport and recreation
Derby is home to the famous Derby County Football Club, which was established in 1884 and has a long history in English football. The city also hosts Derby RFC rugby union club making it a great place for anyone who enjoys live games and matches.
Property in Derby
According to Rightmove “The majority of sales in Derby during the last year were semi-detached properties, selling for an average price of £218,407. Detached properties sold for an average of £354,843, with terraced properties fetching £163,070.” There are also a number of new housing developments. Tilia Homes offer beautiful apartments and up to 3 and 4 bedroom homes on an estate that it only 6 minutes from the centre of town. Similarly, Redrow have a development of new homes that are well located and offers properties varying in size.
