Good Oaks Home Care - Reading and Newbury has reached the finals of the 2020 Care Heroes Awards.

The Awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of social care teams and individuals throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Commenting on the finalists, Home Care Insight said:

"Carers and office teams supported each other with supplies and food parcels, and stepped up to keep the service running uninterrupted. Even the company owners did the shopping for staff who were self-isolating, leaving supplies on their door step and texting them to let them know they had been delivered.

The company’s cloud-based care management system enabled families to access care records remotely, which was a source of reassurance and relief for families unable to visit their loved ones.

The team also facilitated zoom and skype calls between loved ones with tablet computers, so they could talk face-to-face, and this made a huge difference people’s mental health during an incredibly difficult and stressful time."

Some of the points that most impressed the judges were:

  • That people were cared for in a holistic way, rather than time-and-task based. This meant if carers needed to stay slightly longer with a client who was feeling isolated, low or anxious, they were given that time. If clients were running low on supplies, carers would pop back after their visits with some shopping for them.
  • Weekly phonecalls were made to all clients from members of the management team, to provide contact with the outside world and provide updates and reassurance, as well as to answer any concerns or queries the client might have.
  • Carers facilitated communication between clients and their families that were unable to visit, using technology and teaching clients how to use it themselves.
