CARE EXPERTISE

Dementia Home Care

People living with dementia require a specialist type of carer who is both understanding and experienced with working with people who have memory and mobility impairments as well as other mental and physical difficulties.

At Good Oaks Home Care, we provide both home care visits and live in carers for those suffering with dementia.

FLEXIBILITY AND DEDICATION

Our Approach to Dementia Home Care

Supporting people living with all stages of dementia

Good, enabling dementia home care can transform the lives of people with dementia and their families. With skilled, reliable and empathetic support, people with dementia can continue doing the things they love, with the people they love, in the community they are rooted in.

Because dementia can be such a disorienting and frightening experience, stability, continuity, compassion and expertise form the basis of our work providing dementia care at home.

Different forms of dementia affect everyone differently, so we believe it is important to focus on the individual and their strengths and weaknesses, rather than on the condition.

Please see the information in our dementia resources section for information and tips for caring for people with dementia.

Visiting Dementia Home Care

From thirty minutes to round-the-clock care, visiting dementia home care is a responsive, flexible option to promote independence at home.

Our aim is to support our clients to stay in their own homes, maintaining their independence and dignity by providing the care they want, in the way they want it.

Your carer can provide help with:

  • Meal preparation
  • Personal care, such as washing and dressing
  • Medication administration
  • Help around the home
  • Companionship
  • Help getting out to shops and appointments

Live-in Dementia Care

Live-in care in Derby and Ashbourne is a cost-effective, safe and personalised alternative to residential care homes.

Staying generally at least a week at a time, Good Oaks' live-in carers provide one-to-one care to their clients and can also mange the home and shopping requirements.

Live-in carers also provide personal care, and help their clients maintain their hobbies, interests and routines, as well as facilitating social contact, both online and offline where appropriate.

background

John H lives with his wife in the bungalow they retired to 30 years ago. A retired scientist, he was diagnosed with dementia in 2009. He was cared for by his wife, who has macular degeneration. John’s daughter initially contacted Good Oaks about providing support in 2011.

Our manager assessed Mr and Mrs H in their own home, and we began a dementia home care package of visiting once a day to prepare meals, as Mrs H was starting to find this difficult.

Our regular carers formed a strong, enabling relationship with Mr and Mrs H. As time went on and despite both being very independent, they started to accept more support, with calls changing and more help being provided in the mornings.

Companionship is a big part of the dementia home care package with Mr and Mrs H. Good Oaks carers bring in audiobooks on topics that interest Mr H, and read the paper to Mrs H, as well as taking them out to shops and appointments.

Over time the package of care increased to live-in care to give greater peace of mind for the family and to better meet the needs of Mr and Mrs H. They are still at home, now both aged 94 and enjoy their time together in the place that they love.

Good Oaks continues to work with the family to facilitate Mr and Mrs H’s wish to remain at home.
